Hopewell Elementary School Science Fair
Register to participate.
All young scientists wishing to display a project at the fair must register in advance through this online form. We strongly encourage early registration in order to reserve your space and your project board. Final registration deadline is February 26.
Projects should be student driven.
Project ideas should come from the students, and the project should be driven by them. Parents should use their best judgment in deciding when to get involved, such as when there is a potential safety issue. See Safety Guidelines. For especially young kids, parents may provide some guidance, but it is important that the kids be able to call the project their own and be prepared to speak about it to an evaluator.
Working with someone else.
You may work on your project independently, with a Mentor from Central High School, or you may work with a partner who is also a student at Hopewell Elementary School, for example, a classmate or a sibling. If you would like more information regarding the Mentor Program please read this document or to request to work with a mentor, fill out this form
Need help choosing a topic?
When it comes to choosing a topic, the sky is the limit! What have you wondered about? The best topics come from your own genuine curiosity about how something works, or why something is the way that it is. But if you have trouble thinking of something on your own, just click the tab at the top for some helpful links.
We will also be displaying ideas in the School Library to assist you and, of course your teachers are always available for help and support.
Judging and awards.
Our science fair is adding a competitive element this year. Open to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, if you are of the competitive spirit, you may CHOOSE to participate in one of 3 categories...."Best Invention", "Best Experiment" or "Best Presentation". Our goal is simply to encourage scientific exploration and discovery and promote a lifelong passion for science. Every participant, whether competing or not, will have an opportunity to briefly present their project to a judge, and they will each receive a medal, certificate, t-shirt and 1 free pass into The Liberty Science Center. The winners in the special categories will also receive a trophy and 2 free passes into The Liberty Science Center.
Submit your photos!
During the evening of the science fair, on the big screen we will be displaying a slide show of photos taken by you! So parents -- while your young scientist is busy conducting that wild experiment, sneak out your digital camera and capture some shots. Then upload them here by March 21, so we can include them in the slide show. Note: All submissions may not be included in the show.
Volunteers needed!
A big event like the science fair wouldn't be possible without the help of numerous volunteers. We have all kinds of different jobs to be done, so if you think you can spare an hour or two on the day of the fair, we would love your help. To view our job descriptions, click here. Please contact Michele Sawicki and Trish Shah at sciencefair2011@comcast.net and sign up now!
"Scientific Parent and Community Expo"
We will again be including an expo from parents and community members who have a science background and would like to demonstrate their expertise at the fair. If you are one of these special people, and would like to participate, please fill out this form and send it back as an email. For our current list of presenters click here.
Dinner and a Show!
Dinner will be avaiable throughout the evening, by Sodexo and, as usual, delicious desserts and beverages provided by our fabulous 5th grade. Also, a fun, exciting and interactive science show, will be presented
